If you’re trying to lose a few pounds, it’s likely you’ve heard a lot of hype about green tea weight loss regimens and special weight loss tea that supposedly will melt off the pounds. The bad news is — as you probably suspected — that there’s no real shortcut for the hard work, sweat and sacrifice required to lose weight. But the good news is, tea can be an excellent part of a healthy weight loss regimen. So, here are some dos and don’ts for losing weight with tea:
DO
Do drop sodas and other sugary beverages in favor of unsweetened iced tea. There are so many types and flavors of tea to explore that you might not even miss the soda after a while. Green teas make excellent iced teas — especially those flavored with lemongrass, tangerine or other flavors to give them a little kick. Herbal teas are excellent too — especially fruity ones, such as raspberry, acai berry or pomegranate.
DO sometimes substitute green tea for coffee, especially if you drink your coffee with lots of milk and sugar. While there is no miracle tea, green tea comes closest of any tea out there. It is loaded with vitamins and antioxidants, and some preliminary studies have indicated it might have fat burning capabilities that could aid weight loss. So, drink a cup of green tea before your workout.
DO add a little bit of extra flavor and some health benefits to your smoothies by making them with green tea instead of juice. (This also will save you some calories.) Green tea smoothies make a refreshing, healthy breakfast when you’re trying to shed pounds. (Green tea/strawberry/banana is a particularly tasty combo.)
DO try to get used to drinking your tea without added sweetener or milk. It might take a while, but once you get used to it, you’ll be happy about all the calories you’re not consuming — and you might even say it tastes better.
DON’T
DON’T take herbal “diet” or “slimming” teas without consulting with your doctor first, and it’s almost never a good idea to take these long term. They vary in the herbs they contain, but some contain very potent herbs that could even interact with certain medications and aren’t recommended for people with certain medical conditions.
DON’T pay a lot of money for ordinary tea you could buy at a grocery store or your local Asian market because a company claims their tea offers a weight loss miracle.
DON’T try to stave off hunger pains by guzzling lots of hot or iced tea. If you’re hungry, eat — just make it a healthy snack!
